Overcoming the Challenges of Implementing a Multi-Country, Multi-Business Unit ERP System

Introduction

Companies that are focused on growth must continuously adapt and evolve to stay ahead of the competition. For the construction industry, this means implementing advanced technology solutions to improve efficiency, compliance, and scalability across multiple business units and countries.

One such solution is the use of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, which are designed to streamline and automate various business processes. In this article, we will delve into a case study of a Scandinavian construction company that successfully revamped its ERP system through effective testing and Quality Assurance (QA) processes.

Our client, a Top 10 Global Construction Company, is on a mission to innovate and build what's good for people and society – they now develop, design, and construct everything from green office buildings to smart homes and infrastructure.

The cooperation between us has been ongoing for 12+ years, since 2011, and this is one of our longest-lasting projects, and we are very proud of its continued success!

In this post, we will explore the challenges faced, the solutions implemented, and the results achieved, highlighting the critical role of thorough testing and QA in the development and deployment of complex systems like ERP solutions.

Case Study: Scandinavian Construction Company's ERP System

Our client’s primary goal was to launch a cutting-edge ERP system capable of covering all business processes of multiple business units in a single instance while complying with the laws and regulations of five different countries.

Moreover, the new platform aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of international business processes, enable consolidation and reporting using reporting currency and group chart accounts, and offer robust configuration options.

ITMAGINATION worked closely with the client for over a decade, focusing on the design, development, and maintenance of the tailor made ERP system. We created a web and mobile platform that allowed them to analyze and optimize business processes in detail.

At the project's peak, ITMAGINATION employed over 60 developers across six interdisciplinary teams to ensure successful delivery.

The current development team includes thirteen members, with roles ranging from:

  • Team Leader & Architect
  • QA Team Leader
  • .NET Developers
  • Business Analysts
  • Manual Testers
  • SDETs
  • Administrator
  • Data Developer

A. The Challenge

1. Outdated technology stack:

The Scandinavian construction company was using an ERP system that, while well-tailored to their business needs, was built on an outdated technology stack. This presented challenges in terms of system performance, maintenance, and scalability.

2. Requirement to cover multiple business processes and units:

The new ERP system needed to accommodate various business processes, including construction, commercial, and residential operations. It also had to support multiple business units within a single instance, adding complexity to the project.

3. Compliance with laws and regulations of multiple countries:

The new ERP system had to be compliant with the legal and regulatory requirements of five different countries in which the construction company operated. This necessitated a thorough understanding of these requirements and their implications on system design.

B. The Solution

1. Detailed analysis and optimization of business processes:

To address these challenges, the Scandinavian construction company conducted a comprehensive analysis of their existing business processes and identified areas for optimization. This provided a solid foundation for the development of the new ERP system.

2. Design, implementation, and maintenance of a new ERP system:

The construction company collaborated with ITMAGINATION to design, implement, and maintain a new ERP system that covered all required business processes and supported multiple business units within a single instance.

3. Operational management of project teams and QA processes:

To ensure the success of the project, the construction company established effective operational management practices for project teams and QA processes. This included regular communication, monitoring of progress, and adherence to best practices.

C. The Results

1. Successful deployment in multiple countries and business units:

The new ERP system was successfully deployed across seven business units in five different countries, demonstrating its ability to accommodate diverse business needs and regulatory requirements.

2. Improved day-to-day operations:

With the new ERP system in place, the Scandinavian construction company experienced significant improvements in their day-to-day operations. The system's enhanced performance, scalability, and compliance capabilities contributed to a more efficient and effective working environment.

By prioritizing thorough testing and quality assurance, the Scandinavian construction company was able to successfully revamp its ERP system, resulting in improved operations across multiple countries and business units.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the case study of the Scandinavian construction company showcases the significant impact of effective testing and QA processes on the successful implementation of an ERP system.

By thoroughly analyzing and optimizing their business processes, collaborating with ITMAGINATION to design, implement, and maintain the new system, and employing effective operational management practices for project teams and QA processes, the company was able to overcome the challenges associated with outdated technology, diverse business needs, and multi-country regulatory requirements.

The successful deployment of the new ERP system across multiple business units and countries resulted in improved day-to-day operations, demonstrating the value of prioritizing thorough testing and quality assurance in complex system development and implementation. As industries continue to evolve, companies that focus on quality assurance and innovation will be well-equipped to adapt to changing market demands and achieve lasting success.
